Evaluation
The genre of my music video is R&B and I have used various generic conventions to evidently reflect develop and challenge the genre of my music video.
When analysing various R&B music videos you will notice there are different types of conventions, to different R&B videos. One example could be a sexual video of perhaps a topless male and this connotes a sense of sexuality other videos show wealth and jewellery with lots of cars and women. But my video is the much emotional and sensitive side to an R&B video. These types of song are called a slow jam which is a subgenre of R&B. Slow R&B songs these days are usually in grey-scale or have a dim tone to the video to express the theme and tone of the video. Dark colours are also used to evoke emotion and all through out my music video these dark colours and themes are performed and grey-scale scenes are also shown in my video at 0.50.
Another way in which I have reflected that my music video uses conventions of a R&B genre is that I have narrative which is about a the artist 'Mario’ my narrative also includes elements of a romance genre which shows “Mario” keeps seeing other women and eventually realises his doing wrong to the person that he really loves. Which is shown at 1.27 and onwards this means having a co-star along-side the musician which is very common with R&B 'slow jams'. Furthermore a slow jam are mostly about being in love or breaking up and normally doesn’t have much nudity involved in it. These songs are mostly done by females however I have challenged the genre of ordinary slow jams by having a male perform this video. A music video shows the relationship between lyrics and visuals and I have included this in my own video shown in the early parts of my video at 0.21.this illustrates one of the six points that Goodwin stated was a convention of a music video.
My music video is about closing the distance between him and his lover and resisting temptation from others the typical convention of a slow jam video would be to wear dark clothing symbolising sorrow and sadness. R&B conventions would include things like cars and women however I have only used the jewellery the reason Thave done this is to show the worth of my artist this is shown in my music video at 0.15 when my artist is performing his solo part. Another one of Goodwin’s points was the relationship between music and visuals and this is demonstrated in my music video at 2.28
Furthermore lot of close-up shots are also used in R&B music videos which are also a convention this is used to show the beauty/handsomeness of the artist this is shown at the introduction of my music video. The bright lighting was also used to bring that sense of reality this then also allows the audience to look closely at the artist and to be able to interact with them.
How effective is the combination of your main product and your ancillary texts?
When observing my main product, the music video kryptonite combined with the ancillary texts - the digi-pak and magazine advertisement are very effective as a whole. In my opinion I believe that all work combined very well and would be very obvious that all are related. Evidently my pictures and my theme colours of all my products have came together to work efficiently to produce the sense of emotion and compassion. Each of my images show a story behind them and allow the audience to already sense the tone of my artist from my digi-pak to my magazine advert to my music video all show signs of strong emotion, the dark colours have also helped this to link up much better.
When you observe my music video the early stages already allow the audience to acknowledge the distance between both characters 0.39. This distance is also portrayed on the front cover of the artist's digi-pak with the artist is pictured looking into the sky watching the faded image of his lover. This is effective used to show the relationship between the video and the ancillary text. The type of genre I was trying to represent was a slow jam R&B genre this would include using dark colours like grey and black and in my main product and ancillary text these colours have been expressed and also shows the relationship of my combined sources. This is very effective and allows the audience to understand the theme and tone from every angle the magazine advert the digi-pak and music video all work in the way I want to evidently express the genre I am trying to achieve.
I wanted to apply consistency which has worked effectively in my opinion in drawing my audience and allowing them to identify the genre of my main product and ancillary text sending out a subconscious link in the audiences mind. The colours that I have used are simple in my opinion but these colours represent the tone and mood of my production. The magazines advert although the background colours are simple the images are very bright and help the artist to stand out more effectively then on a white background.
As a combined production of my main product and my ancillary text all they have been used effectively and all work to support each other. My work shows a clear link to each other in more then one way firstly the colours that I have used are consistent showing the relationship throughout my production.
What have you learnt from your audience feed back?
From the feedback that I had received I believe that my target audience had been fairy pleased with the production of my music video. Before beginning the construction of my media products, I did a questionnaire that when answered would help me better understand who my target audience was and what they want from my media product. However before achieving what my target audience wanted I had to improve my initial ideas to enable my music video attract my target audience. Like added more effects and editing to the scenes also adding more scenes of the narrative throughout my music video. But I have learnt this from my audience feedback, not just my own. After identifying my weakness and making changes I then knew my audience would like my video because I had created an R&B video that they wanted to see. So I decided that I could present it to a wider range of audience using a few networking sites and showing my video to people and class mates I used www.youtube.com. This is a networking site that has been used for many years and is very popular. After the audience had seen my music video they had given me positive comments this then was evidence that I had done a successful job and my work was completed. When my music video had ended my audience applauded me many people approached me afterwards and congratulated me on such a successful video and even said that I should pursue filming as a career.
I also asked what the audience what they thought of the idea of front cover image being turnt away from the audience they all agreed that it gave significant meaning and from this it would be eye-catching as the audience would see the emotion that I was trying to convey. Most of the comments were positive and actually were all the things I wanted to convey when creating my magazine front cover people had told me they sensed the emotion just from looking at the image and that it really stood out through the black background. At first I felt that the background was rather plain but they had made me much more confident about my decision to keep it simple which then allowed my stars image to have a greater effect. Furthermore people felt that it helped the artist look more attractive and would draw in more female interest.
Lastly my digi-pak front cover was very interesting my audience feedback on the topic of my digi-pak was very pleasant they had said that the artist looking into the sky at his lover told the whole story without them even listening to the music video. The colour of my artist’s digi-pak was very effect the audience had told me it helped them understand the theme and the tone of the whole production. At first I had 3 colours throughout my digi-pak however my audience had given me feedback and said that it would be more effective to have one colour and it wouldn’t confuse the tone and the emotion of the whole digi-pak. This made me feel more confident in knowing that my whole music production is a success. From my audience feedback I was able to learn what I could improve on, and from further audience feedback I was able to say I successfully achieved what I aimed to have achieved.

How did you use new media technologies in the construction and research planning and evaluation stages?
I used new technologies in constructing and researched my planning to enable myself to develop and create well presented production which includes my digi-pak magazine advert and my main video.
Firstly I used an internet site called www.Youtube.com to assist me in researching the genre of the type of music video I wanted to represent which was a slow jam music R&B video. After assessing and researching many of video of the genre I wanted to present it enabled me to study the conventions that I need to create my music video. I then used a camcorder this was very useful to me as I was able to connect the camera to the computer via USB and instantly view my footage which I could then copy onto the Apple Mac and edit the my clips through the software available on the apple Mac such as ‘Imovie’. ‘Imovie’ was very effective in combining my scenes together in a neat and orderly fashion and allowed me to add any additional effects to enhance the quality of my video. I also used a Sony still camera this was useful for taking pictures for my ancillary text as well as images for my planning such as "location shots”.
I also had to use a still camera for my digi-pak work taking photographs of my artist and location shots for my planning work. I had to use programmes on the Apple Mac computers help me edit my footage this was a huge part of the media technology that I had to use throughout my coursework. I used ‘Photoshop’ to produce the digi-pak and the magazine advert. I am very familiar with what this software has to offer due to using it in AS Media Studies and in Art AS and A2 level. This was very useful towards the effect that I wanted to put across to the audience ‘Photoshop’ allowed me to use bright effects to help my artist stand out in the way I wanted. When using Photoshop it helped me develop my digi-pak and brought the effects and colouring I wanted to bring across Photoshop helped me bring out the theme and tone of the digi-pak I wanted to portray.
Once I had generated the confidence in using the software ‘Imovie’ I then began to refine and adjust my music video, trimming clips, adding digital effects like diming the narrative shots to a grey scale colour. Which is a convention of a slow jam music video I then used ‘Imovie’ to speeding up and slowing shots down for dramatic effect I used the social highly popular. When I was satisfied with my work and I was ready to present my video to the audience I uploaded my final video to a video site www.Youtube.com.
When logging into www.blogspot.com it allowed me to gather and aciculate all my research and planning of my music video Mario-kryptonite. Blogging is an efficient way of presenting your work as it cannot be lost like loose pieces of paper - only deleted, you may edit your work as you please and it's presentable and easily accessible from anywhere and to anyone in the world.
