Born Leslie Feist in Amherst, Nova Scotia, singer/songwriter Feist goes by her surname when it comes to making music for a living. The songstress relocated to Calgary at a young age and got her start playing in an all-girl punk band named Placebo (not to be confused with the U.K. modern rock act of the same name). After winning a battle of the bands contest, Placebo (whose members were still in high school) played their first gig opening for the Ramones in 1991, and for the next five years, Feist perfected her rock & roll ways
Fiest is the name of the digipak that I am going to analyse when observing the front cover of the digipak it presents itself as being quiet unique the image in the centre of the cover is very dominant and effective and the way it’s done is by the white background. That helps in become as dominant as it is the way the title is posted is also very different but also powerful on the cover because of the colour of the lettering the black always dominant over white. The lettering is very different to other covers with half of the title sitting up against the other half of the title This continues the black and white theme of the digipak as the images are mostly black and white and the backgrounds are white throughout the digipak.
When observing the central image of the digipak it is very noticeable to identify that his is topless. But it is hard to tell due to the heavy shadowing; Fiest seems to be doing this to continue the simplistic theme rather than being sexual. However because the was she is positioned in the image the audience wouldn’t really be able to see explicit parts of her body the strays of light going across the image stand out deeply due to the darkness of the image the image is also a close-up shot and allows the audience to be as close as they can be the image
Fiest like most artist do is the dominant and main image of the digipak when looking inside the digipak I can identify she has a range of unique pictures expressing to the audience she has different interests by her bringing together different types of images its allows her target audience to be aware that she’s different and has something different to offer to the average artist. The other dominant image is of string, this features on the front cover image and then twice in the digipak. This could be to suggest that everything is somehow connected; however there can be various interpretations, Fiest probably wanted it this way too.
The four picture of the digipak shows a image of fiest in black and white she also appears to be naked in the image which is very strong and powerful allowing the audience to really connect with the image and because it is also a close-up shot it allows the audience to take all that he or she can from the image. It’s a dark doll moody image her eyes are looking very direct perhaps to make that connection with her target audience it is very interesting the way she bring her hair down to one side to maybe allow us to observe her strong cheek bones. The third image is odd in my opinion it has different colour of sowing material this might express to the audience that she’s articulate or maybe there could be a message behind it and the colours could symbolise her different characters.
Finally her second image is very interesting it shows a white background with a human body with these unique patterns around it. When first looking at it I seemed to be very baffled about the image but when observing it closely an idea occurred to be of what it could mean. Around the head area of the body you can see that there is a small little pattern and around the heart area there is a much bigger eider pattern. This could convey that her unique ideas and thoughts when singing or writing lyrics mostly come from her heart hearty and not her head and strong fans of fiest would also agree with me about this idea. Around the mouth area you can see that there are patterns that are coming out of the mouth of the body which would perhaps symbolise the ideas and her thoughts from her heart are coming out for us her audience to hear and to understand.
Her target audience would be indie 20-30’s year olds due to the heavy 70’s influence and nostalgia that she offers.
